The Challenge
Operating in the middle of the Broads, this farm faced growing pressure from environmental regulators to reduce nutrient losses to water. Granular fertiliser made precise application difficult, with waste on margins and risks to ditches. Labour and logistics added further pressure: forklifts tied up, heavy bags to handle, and wasted product if weather interrupted applications.
The Switch to Liquid
In 2013, the farm made the move to Nitrasol liquid fertiliser. Initially starting small with an older sprayer, they soon invested in a modern self-propelled sprayer fitted with dribble bars to ensure accurate placement. Bulk tanks were installed in the new yard, enabling direct deliveries and simple integration with the spray operation.

Malting barley consistently met grade, even in dry seasons, whilst a number of farms on a granular fertiliser program have struggled with late nitrogen uptake in dry conditions and therefore resulting in high nitrogen grain samples.
