Securing the UK’s Liquid Fertiliser Supply from our partners in Trinidad

The Nitrasol team acts locally but trades globally and last week visited Trinidad, the world’s largest exporter of ammonia and related fertiliser products that powers worldwide agriculture and sustainable food production.

Our long-term trade partners Proman have made the multi-billion dollar investments in fertiliser production that provide Nitrasol and British farmers with the security of supply for fertilisers that are the foundation of the food chain in this country.

Why Trinidad Matters to British Agriculture

Trinidad is based in the Venezuelan Gas Basic, just 4 miles from the coast of South America and has generations of proven deep well reserves of clean burning gas, which provide the feedstock for fertiliser production.  Proman is the Trinidad’s largest producer of ammonia and is fully integrated producer operating globally across multiple continents with more than 2,200 staff worldwide and 1,200 in Trinidad

Proman owns two gas fields that exclusively supply their production campus directly via private dedicated pipelines. Their rigs are unmanned and completely powered by green solar and wind energy.

It’s a closed-loop integrated production process that comprises multiple ammonia plants which feed downstream production facilities for UAN Liquid Fertilisers, Melamine, and Methanol production.

This gives Proman a level of supply security that is rare in global fertiliser manufacturing. It also reduces the upstream dependency risk that UK growers are exposed to during volatile gas markets.

The Proman process features a process that captures every molecule of CO₂ generated from the Steam Reformation of Natural Gas and reuses it in downstream products that have real economic and commercial value.

At Proman’s facility no CO₂ is vented to the atmosphere. This aligns directly with Nitrasol’s commitment to low-emission nutrient delivery and gives UK growers confidence that their liquid fertilisers minimise their carbon footprint from the moment it is produced.

Partnering with Proman enhances Nitrasol’s ability to supply UK farms in a closed supply chain that extends from the gas field to the fields of British farmers, where the first time the product meets the atmosphere is when it emerges from the nozzle.   Every stage is integrated, efficient and controlled.

Lord John Fuller, Chairman of Brineflow, said:

“We were able to see at first hand how Proman’s multi-billion investments in fertiliser production were making a significant difference to powering food security in the United Kingdom, a whole ocean away.

Every molecule of carbon dioxide created by Proman’s process was recaptured and used within the production of UAN, melamine or clean-burning methanol so that not a drop of CO₂ is released to the atmosphere.

Better, we could see how the combination of Proman’s gas platforms powered by renewable energy, dedicated pipelines, efficient production, and clean-burning ships produces fertiliser with fully integrated security of supply from the gas field to the fields of British farmers at the lowest possible environmental impact.

We were all impressed by the plant, the staff and the plans for the future which tread as lightly as possible on the world.”

James Peck, Principal at PX Farms, shared:

“Visiting Proman in Trinidad has been a real eye-opener for us at P.X. Farms. Witnessing UAN production first-hand, and understanding that the process produces no carbon dioxide, was particularly impressive.

It’s easy to forget the scale of innovation and dedication behind the products we rely on every day in British agriculture.

Meeting the people who make it happen, and understanding the journey our UAN takes before we purchase it through Brineflow, has given us a new appreciation of the entire supply chain. We filmed the whole experience for our YouTube channel because it’s important for farmers and the wider public to see just how much care, expertise and global collaboration goes into supporting food production.”

Why This Visit Matters for UK Growers

For Nitrasol customers, this trip confirms three things:

  1. Supply security is engineered into a secure supply chain, not assumed.
Private gas fields, dedicated pipelines, efficient production, massive storage, and deep-water shipping underpin continuity.
  2. Environmental performance is built into production, not retrofitted.
CO₂ capture is complete which provides outstanding industry leadership that is fundamental to the long term sustainable ambition and commitment of Proman and
  3. Nitrasol’s liquid system stands on a global foundation of reliability, efficiency and transparency.
That aligns with Nitrasol’s values which marry technical and environmental leadership, nutrient use efficiency and the lowest possible emissions from our modern UK terminals in Great Yarmouth and Sunderland

This is the operational backbone behind every litre of Nitrasol that’s delivered into a farm tank.
